The Opportunity
The project involved managing a large-scale connectivity installation across more than 220 properties. One of York’s leading student accommodation providers, I G Property, manages more than 300 student homes across the city. The business was looking for a futureproof, cost-effective solution that could deliver high-performance connectivity, improve reliability and help it remain competitive in a crowded student accommodation market.
The Challenge
Connectivity across properties was inconsistent, with some benefiting from partial fibre services while others relied on legacy infrastructure. FTTP availability had been limited in some areas, whilst a previous supplier did not provide full fibre at all. As a result, students experienced varying levels of performance, impacting both their studies and the digital services that are now central to everyday life. I G Property wanted to standardise and improve connectivity performance across its portfolio.
SCG Consulting also needed to overcome concerns around migration and deployment. Previous installation programmes had been poorly coordinated, creating delays, inefficiencies and unnecessary administration. The challenge was not only to identify the right connectivity supplier and secure a competitive commercial outcome, but also to ensure a smooth, scalable rollout that would avoid the disruption experienced during previous upgrades.
The Solution
SCG Consulting partnered with SCG Together, leveraging their close relationship with connectivity backbone supplier CityFibre to deliver full fibre connectivity through a carefully managed large-scale deployment.
This shift away from legacy services provided students with consistently high upload and download speeds, reducing complaints and fault reports to ease pressure on internal teams, whilst avoiding rising renewal costs associated with older technology.
To address concerns around deployment, this strong collaboration enabled SCG Consulting to offer a postcode-based installation programme. This structured approach simplified property access, improved installation efficiency and ensured a more predictable rollout experience than I G Property had previously encountered.
Further value was provided through SCG Together’s flexible pricing and contract structure. This gave I G Property the ability to align connectivity costs with occupancy levels and seasonal demand, deploying a 160 Mbps service during the lower-demand summer months before upgrading to 1 Gbps ahead of the September student intake. This flexibility was made possible by CityFibre’s product model, which supports seamless, zero-outage upgrades from 160 Mbps to 8.5 Gbps. As a result, I G Property has a future-ready connectivity platform that can scale alongside the needs of its business and tenants without requiring significant infrastructure changes or service disruption.
By combining improved performance with a competitive commercial model, SCG Consulting helped I G Property avoid costly renewal increases, enhance the tenant experience, and establish a digital foundation capable of supporting future services and smart-living technologies.
